I work primarily in three mediums: graphite drawing, photography and music. In certain cases more than one of these mediums may be used on a single project. However, I find it helpful to concentrate on one of the three at a time. In doing this I can, for instance, work on a series of photographs for a while and when finished, start a drawing or musical project with renewed enthusiasm.

As with any individual, my work has been significantly influenced by my background and environment. I was born in Italy and moved to the United States with my parents when I was five years old. At home, we maintained our Italian customs to the extent that what I saw of American lifestyles appeared slightly mysterious to me. Eventually, I grew to accept the differences but the mixed cultural messages I received in my youth greatly effected my perception of the world.

There was a time when I drew distinctions between my commercial work (Illustration, Design and Photography) and the work I do solely for its own - or my own - sake. To me, these distinctions are now somewhat superfluous. I try to approach whatever project I'm engaged in with the same dedication regardless of its ultimate purpose. I have found that all work is a form of practice and that even the most tedious activity can yield the most surprising results.

Everything I do is based on the concept of continual work. The idea of being unoccupied is abhorrent to me. I draw great satisfaction from completing one task and then moving on to something else. After graduating from art school there was a period when I became comparatively stagnant in my creative pursuits. That period lasted for nearly ten years and ended when I began my Photo USA series in the late 1980s.
