PROOF
Photographs by Maurice Mattei

The pictures I shot in the 1990s have taken various forms over the years. I'm not sure that any of them have been successful. This is the latest version. The idea started with the Dalton Pool series (see MMattei.com/daltonpool) in which I did high resolution scans of my proof sheets and used the scans as the finished print. I took the same approach here.

In this case, I use two images instead of one. The pictures were sometimes shot consecutively but, more often, they were taken from different proof sheets and placed next to each other for this presentation. I enjoyed printing these pictures in this fashion because it allowed me the freedom to act as I imagine a film editor does in assembling a movie. I can jump from one scene to the other quickly and with little effort.

Some may question the print quality when using proof sheets as the final product. Personally, I like the look of these pictures more than an actual copy from a negative. The raw quality seems to fit the subject matter that I was shooting at the time.
