One of my favorite works of Art is Donatello's Mary Magdalene. While there are many more beautiful sculptures, Donatello's masterpiece transcends the Renaissance ideal of beauty and depicts its subject with harsh realism. It is a powerful - and inexplicable - leap into the Contemporary; the Magdalene as repentant sinner, still carrying the scars of her many demons (according to St. Luke; 7 demons.) She is saved by Christ, by the Grace of God. When starting my Urban Dweller series, this sculpture was an inspiration. In fact, I did my own version of a present day Mary Magdalene (pictured here). True to form, however, my drawing is the sinner before salvation.
